Summary: Cnidium seed is an effective herb with many uses. It is very commonly
used as a sex tonic, and deservingly so. There aren't too many sexual formulas
that don't include the cnidium seed. It increases sexual potency/increases sperm
secretion, and stimulates sexual desire. A compound in cnidium called osthole
was found to help relax the corpus cavernosa of the penis in rabbits. It is believed
to increase nitric oxide and cGMP levels while inhibiting the production of PDE-5,
an enzyme that breaks downcGMP and weakens a man's erection. So apparently
cnidium seed increases nitric oxide and cGMP production which relaxes penile
tissue, allowing for greater erections, all the while inhibiting the PDE-5 enzyme,
helping to sustain them. These effects are just as beneficial for erecting the
female genital tissues. The female's clitoris contains the very same erectile tissue
as the male penis, so cnidium seed can help engorge and erect the clitoris while
promoting it's sustainability. It used to warm the womb, and increase female
fertility as well.
It disperses cold, expels wind, and strengthens the lower back. Cnidium seed has
anti-inflammatory properties and a powerful anti-septic action. It can kill parasites
internally and externally (wash), treats rashes, and itchy skin. It has also been
found to have anti-allergic effects and to be an anti-histamine which may protect
against bronchial asthma.
Historically it was believed to strengthen the bones and modern research studies
in rodents have shown that it may actually do so.
Very interesting and important studies are showing cnidium seed to have
multi-aspect anti-tumor activities. These show direct tumor inhibiting activity,
anti-mutagenicity, improvement of immune functions, and reversal of multi-drug
tolerance of tumors. Another important finding is that cnidium protects and
strengthens the pituitary-adrenocortex axis. This is ideal because a strong
functioning of the pituitary and adrenal cortex is necessary for strong and healthy
sexual functions as well as overall health. Cnidium seed can help people
rejuvenate and protect their sexual functions from harm due to unhealthy lifestyles,
stress, and/or sexual depletion. Clearly the cnidium seed is an important,
multi-purpose herb whose long history of use is validated by modern scientific
studies.
