Summary: The raw root of rehammania is not considered tonic so it is prepared in a special way to change its qualities. The dried root is mixed with wine, amomum fruit and tangerine peel, and then steamed and dried in the sun alternately and repeatedly nine times until it turns black inside and out with a soft, sticky and greasy texture. This changes its nature into a nourishing tonic. Prepared rehmannia root is the most commonly used herb in chinese herbalism to replenish kidney yin jing and essence. It is extremely effective. It nourishes and builds the blood. Most kidney and sex formulas will include rehmannia to some degree. It is used in both yin and yang formulas whether it is blood related, kidney related, or sexually related. It is often included in powerful yang formulas to form the formulas "base." This is to always protect the yin aspect of a person and to make sure they don't overuse their yin reserves by consuming the yang herbs. So yang herbs are taken on top of a yin base so the "fire" doesn't burn up all the "fuel."

Prepared Rehmannia should typically be taken with "Qi" tonics and/or digestive herbs due to its "greasy" and "sticky" nature. This will increase its digestibility and protect against stomach distention or loose stool.

It is deeply restorative and can replenish those who have exhausted themselves through mental and physical stress, excessive sexual activities, drugs, etc. It will help rebuild your "battery", adrenals, and yin supplies. Part of its blooding building propertyis due to its high iron content. It can help regulate womans menstrual cycle and increase fertility by warming up the uterus. Rehmannia root contains iridoid glycosides which stimulate the adrenals to produce anti-inflammatories which are responsible for its ability to ease arthritis pain. These glycosides contribute to the production of sex hormones which explains its use for treating menopausal women and impotence in men. Clinical research showed prepared rehmannia to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and increase cerebral blood flow.

Prepared rehmannia helps calm the heart and noticeably increases well-being, especially in those who are yin deficient and are prone to irritability, restless mind, anger, insomnia, and feelings of heat. It strengthens bones and help heal those that have been broken.

Prepared rehmannia root is very rejuvenating and is considered a longevity herb.
